Jung und Digital
Youth in the digital age
Jung und Digital
Abstract
The “Jung und Digital. Native. Nicht Naiv.” campaign by the Landesjugendring NRW explored the opportunities and challenges of digitalization for young people and youth work through four expert-led discussions. It emphasized the need for youth organizations to adapt, fostering digital literacy and critical thinking to empower young people to navigate the complexities of the digital world and participate meaningfully online.
Problem
The campaign “Jung und Digital” aimed to raise awareness among young people of the opportunities and challenges posed by digitalisation. Young people face the challenge of developing digital skills so that they do not naively fall prey to the pitfalls of the digital world, but can instead defend their rights in the digital sphere.
Approach
I was commissioned to develop eye-catching postcards and humorous slogans with illustrations for print and digital publications. The design process was based on an analysis of the target audience of youth organisations and research into current trends in youth culture and the digital sphere. Several slogan and design options were tested iteratively to identify the most effective ones.
Solution
The postcards featured humorous slogans and accompanying illustrations that presented the complex issues surrounding digitalisation in an easy-to-understand and memorable way. The illustrations were playful and cartoon-like, designed to grab people’s attention.
Impact
The campaign helped to increase event awareness. The postcards were placed prominently in 26 youth organisations and events of the Landesjugendring NRW in North-Rhine Westfalia. The humorous approach helped to reach a wider audience and raise awareness of the issue.
Learnings
Finding a good middle ground of humor, eye-cathing illustration and political statements was challenging. Learning about the digital rights problem for the youth was educative and will further inform design decisions for political and design for solidarity.
